In a dramatic turn of events that has captivated the college football world, Lane Kiffin is set to leave Ole Miss to take the helm as head coach at LSU. Kiffin’s departure comes amidst one of the most successful seasons in Ole Miss history, with the team boasting an impressive 11-1 record and a likely berth in the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately for the Rebels, they will have to face the postseason without the guidance of Kiffin.
Kiffin’s move was confirmed through a statement where he expressed that the decision to join LSU was “difficult” and came after considerable reflection and discussions with his family. Although Kiffin expressed a strong desire to lead Ole Miss through the playoffs, his request was denied by Keith Carter, the university’s athletic director. Carter turned down Kiffin’s request despite the team’s plea to have their coach remain, as they believed his presence essential to maintaining their high-performance level.
This means Kiffin’s tenure at Ole Miss has come to an end, concluding with a victory in the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State. During his time at Ole Miss, Kiffin amassed a commendable 55-19 record, clinching three bowl game victories and securing three top-11 finishes in the AP Poll.

As Kiffin transitions to LSU, he is anticipated to receive a significant salary increase. While he earned around $9 million at Ole Miss this year, reports suggest his new contract with LSU could reach approximately $12 million annually over seven years, though exact details remain undisclosed.
There are reports that LSU is willing to support Kiffin with substantial funds for name, image, and likeness deals, potentially allocating $25 to $30 million annually to enhance the team’s roster. Additionally, speculation abounds that Kiffin may bring some of his coaching staff and players from Ole Miss to LSU, a move that could significantly impact the Rebels, who are basking in their most triumphant season since their national championship win in 1962.
Adding to LSU’s tumultuous coaching saga, the school is embroiled in a legal dispute with former head coach Brian Kelly. Having dismissed Kelly, LSU now faces a lawsuit as Kelly seeks the full payout of his $54 million buyout. Therefore, the financial ramifications of these coaching changes could be considerable for LSU.
That’ll all be forgivable if Kiffin leads the Tigers back to national championship contention. He was the top coach on the market, and the LSU got its guy. Now, it’s time to get to work.
