Communications Minister Anika Wells spent almost $100,000 of taxpayer money on a three-day trip to New York City, according to documents released at Senate estimates.

Wells incurred a hefty expense of $94,828.75 on return flights for herself and two aides to participate in the United Nations General Assembly in early September.

A detailed account of the trip expenses shows that Wells’ own ticket amounted to $34,426.58.

Addressing queries about the travel costs during her National Press Club speech, Wells emphasized that her office has been open about the expenses.

“The reason you are aware of these details is due to our commitment to transparency. We will continue to disclose such information through the usual channels,” Wells explained.

“That event sparked global momentum, with various regions following suit, as recently as last week, by announcing similar actions to what Australia is implementing.”

“I am committed to maintaining transparency regarding the expenses, the trip’s implications, and our activities there, as per standard procedures,” she added.
