At least 18 migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in an inflatable boat died when it capsized south of the island of Crete, Greek authorities said.

A Turkish merchant ship discovered a partially submerged boat on Saturday, officials have confirmed.

Two individuals were rescued from the vessel, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation for additional survivors.

Greece is a key entry point into the European Union for many fleeing war and poverty in regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Tragically, fatal incidents during these journeys are not uncommon.

The voyage from Turkey’s coast to nearby Greek islands has historically been a favored route for migrants. This dangerous trek, often undertaken in inflatable rafts or small boats under adverse conditions, has diminished recently due to increased patrols and reported pushbacks.

However, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people arriving from Libya to Crete in recent months.

Authorities are still working to ascertain the origin of the boat.

Authorities have not yet determined where the boat came from.

A ship and a plane from European border agency Frontex, a Greek Coast Guard helicopter and three merchant vessels are taking part in the search operation.
