A bushfire covering 48 hectares has intensified in Redhead, Lake Macquarie, after a shift in the wind from the south pushed it further up the New South Wales coast overnight.

Fire crews are stationed along Redhead Road and Oakdale Road, striving to contain the rapidly advancing blaze, which is now moving unchecked towards the north.

Natural disaster declared

In response to the fires, a natural disaster declaration has been declared for six local government areas, following the destruction or damage of a dozen homes.

Residents affected by the disaster will receive support in New South Wales’ Central Coast, Mid Coast, Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook, Warrumbungle, and Dubbo regions.

“Bushfires of this magnitude are incredibly distressing, and my thoughts go out to everyone impacted,” stated Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain.

“Yesterday’s conditions posed significant challenges, and I extend my gratitude to our emergency services teams who are tirelessly working to protect our communities,” she added.

“The Albanese and Minns Governments are working together to get support to communities impacted by these bushfires as quickly as possible.”

The disaster assistance includes emergency accommodation, grants, loans and other financial support.
