In November, Netflix’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, visited the White House for an extensive meeting with then-President Donald Trump. According to reports from Bloomberg, their discussions covered various topics, with a significant focus on Netflix’s intention to place a bid for Warner Bros. By the conclusion of their meeting, Sarandos felt confident that the White House would not pose any immediate obstacles to Netflix’s plans.

This week, Netflix emerged victorious in the competitive bidding process for Warner, securing the deal with an offer of $82.7 billion. Paramount, under the leadership of CEO David Ellison, was also keen on acquiring the iconic studio and its streaming services. The Ellison family, with patriarch Larry Ellison, holds strong connections with the White House and argued in their proposal that they were uniquely positioned to navigate the regulatory challenges associated with further media consolidation.

Sarandos appeared to have accurately assessed that the Ellisons had overestimated their sway within the political sphere. Despite some public attempts to sway the White House against the acquisition, Netflix ultimately prevailed. Nevertheless, the deal is not set in stone, as Paramount could potentially attempt a hostile takeover or the Justice Department might intervene to halt the transaction.

Previously, Sarandos had tried to purchase Paramount before David Ellison intervened, making the acquisition of Warner Bros. a particularly gratifying achievement.
