Federal Minister Anika Wells finds herself under a new wave of scrutiny due to increasing taxpayer-funded expenses, which critics argue fail to meet public approval.

Recent disclosures reveal that the minister responsible for communications and sport has spent significant sums on flying her husband, Finn McCarthy, to various cricket events, including attending the Boxing Day Test on two occasions.

In defense of these expenses, Wells emphasized the demands of her role. “There are so many weekends away from home, and if you’re the sports minister, a lot of those are deliberately weekend events you’re required to attend because that’s when people watch and play sport,” she explained.

She pointed out her presence in Thredbo as an example, stating it was to draw attention to the additional investment being made in the Paralympics.

Last week, Wells addressed criticisms regarding her costly Olympic-sized expenses, asserting that “every parliamentarian has family reunion entitlements.”

Wells also defended her own Olympic-sized expenses last week, saying “every parliamentarian has family reunion entitlements”.

This defence was echoed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who told the ABC’s Insiders today that “all of the travel was within guidelines”.

The hefty bills have faced criticism from the opposition, after Shadow Industry Minister Alex Hawke said, “whether it’s New York, whether it’s Paris, whether it’s Thredbo, these are expenses that would make the royals blush”.

“If she wants to take her family on a ski holiday, she can pay for it herself,” Shadow Finance Minister James Paterson added.
