Luigi Mangione said 'all these people here for a mass murder, why?' at arraignment: police officer

Following his arraignment in Pennsylvania, Luigi Mangione appeared taken aback by the throng of people assembled outside the courtroom. The surprising turnout was noted by a local police officer in connection with Mangione’s alleged involvement in the December 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

On Tuesday, Mangione found himself back in Manhattan Criminal Court for the sixth day of hearings. These proceedings are crucial in deciding whether certain pieces of evidence will be admissible at his trial. During the session, Altoona Police Officer Stephen Fox recounted Mangione’s reaction at the time of his Pennsylvania arraignment, noting the suspect’s astonishment at the large crowd.

Fox reported that Mangione, while leaving the courtroom, questioned the necessity of such a crowd, saying, “All these people here for a mass murder, why?”

Authorities arrested Mangione on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. His capture was largely due to an employee’s keen eye, who recognized him and prompted a colleague to alert the police. Mangione now faces a slew of state and federal charges relating to the alleged crime.
