Authorities announced on Sunday that a suspect is in custody following a tragic shooting at Brown University, which resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and left nine others injured.

According to police reports cited by Fox News, the suspect was apprehended at a hotel in Coventry, located roughly 17 miles from Providence.

During a press briefing, Providence Chief of Police Colonel Oscar L. Perez Jr. refrained from confirming any connection between the suspect and Brown University, emphasizing that the investigation is still in its preliminary phase.

Colonel Perez outlined the department’s next steps, which include working closely with prosecutors, gathering evidence, and conducting interviews.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley provided an update on the victims, stating that seven are in stable condition, one is in critical but stable condition, and one has been released from medical care.

“We’re going to continue to have our thoughts with the families, the individuals that have been impacted by this horrific event,” said Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee.

Smiley also confirmed that the shelter in place order for the Providence community has been lifted. Brown University had announced the lifting of a campus shelter in place order earlier Sunday morning.
