A man from North Carolina, previously convicted of murder, is accused of fatally shooting a woman after commandeering an ambulance.

Cheyenne Woods, aged 36, was taken into custody on Saturday, facing multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, for allegedly killing 74-year-old Marie Locklear. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office reported that Woods had contacted emergency services to an address on Chavis Road in Red Springs, North Carolina. Upon the arrival of EMS, Woods reportedly pulled a firearm on the paramedics and took control of the ambulance.

Authorities say Woods, while navigating the ambulance, collided with Locklear’s vehicle. He then allegedly shot Locklear before fleeing the location.

Locklear was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she sadly passed away from her injuries.

A statement from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, shared by local NBC affiliate WRAL, revealed that Woods was captured close to the scene of the tragic event. Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins described the incident as a “senseless act of murder by a repeat violent offender,” emphasizing Woods’ history, which includes a prior murder conviction. Wilkins further remarked that Woods has repeatedly shown a blatant disregard for life and legal boundaries.

WRAL detailed Woods’ criminal past, noting his 2017 conviction for second-degree murder following a plea deal related to a 2010 shooting. Initially sentenced to 13 years, Woods served only five years before his release in 2022.

Before that, he was named as a suspect in a 2008 murder, but was only charged with robbery with a deadly weapon in connection with that case. He was convicted in 2012 and was released from prison in 2016.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office charged Woods with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, felony assault on EMS personnel, and eight counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property. On Sunday, authorities added another count of robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, malicious conduct of a prisoner by throwing, emitting, or projecting bodily fluids, and second-degree kidnapping.

Woods is being held at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
