Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke insists the government is taking steps to combat antisemitism in Australia.
After the horrific Bondi Beach shooting, where a Hanukkah celebration was targeted, the Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal claimed the government must take stronger action.

“We haven’t addressed antisemitism with the urgency it requires. Our communication hasn’t been effective, and there’s a lack of education helping people recognize the impact of antisemitism on communities,” she expressed to ABC Radio National yesterday.

Burke refuted accusations that he or the government had been out of touch with Segal regarding her recommendations.

The Home Affairs Minister faced jeers from some onlookers last night while laying a wreath at Bondi Beach.

He acknowledged that emotions remain “raw,” but maintained that visiting Bondi was the right decision.

“It was crucial for me to be there, to visit the site and, alongside the police commissioner, lay that wreath,” he stated.

Burke and other members of the Albanese government were also criticized by Victoria Teplitsky, whose parent was among the victims.

“Tony Burke, as far as I’m concerned, and [Penny] Wong and [Anthony] Albanese, they’re committing treason [to] Australia,” she claimed.

“They’re betraying Australia with the way that they’ve handled everything. I don’t believe anything that he says, I don’t think anyone does.”
