'Miraculous' survival for officer injured in Bondi Beach attack

Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, alongside another officer, was critically injured after being shot during a confrontation with two armed individuals at a Jewish Hanukkah festival on Sunday night.

This morning, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon paid a visit to Hibbert and his family, showing solidarity and support during this difficult time.

At just 22 years old, Hibbert has been with the police for only four months. Despite this, he demonstrated remarkable bravery and instinct during the violent ordeal. Even while injured, he continued to protect and assist others until he was physically unable to do so.

Hibbert’s dedication to his role is driven by a profound commitment to safeguarding the community, even when it comes at a significant personal risk.

His colleagues, present at the scene that night, have visited him in the hospital, sharing stories of his heroism. They highlighted his unwavering dedication to helping those in need, moving toward the danger rather than away from it, even while gravely injured.

The outpouring of support from both the police force and hospital staff has been incredible, and for that, we are immensely thankful.

The support from the police force and hospital staff has been unmatched and we are beyond grateful.

We thank the wider community for their kindness, support, and prayers for Jack and our family during this difficult time.

We ask all to respect our privacy as we move through these next stages to support Jack and all his needs to a full recovery.
