The enigmatic character known as the Major on “Manifest” is actually Kathryn Fitz, portrayed by Elizabeth Marvel. With a Harvard PhD in psychology, Fitz has honed her expertise in psychological warfare over a 30-year career in Black Ops. By the time she appears in the series, she has become a Major-General in the U.S. Army, intrigued by the mysterious return of Montego Air Flight 828, which vanished for five and a half years.
Fitz embarks on a covert operation, targeting the passengers of Flight 828. She abducts 11 individuals, subjecting them to severe psychological experiments to unravel the telepathic Calling phenomenon they experience. Her victims are carefully selected: those without families or connections, ensuring their absence goes unnoticed. Fitz’s ultimate aim is to harness the power of the Callings for military use.
Cal Stone, played by Jack Messina, emerges as a pivotal figure in Fitz’s research due to his potent Callings. Dubbed the “Holy Grail” by Fitz, Cal becomes aware of her sinister agenda. His father Ben (Josh Dallas), aunt Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh), and others team up to rescue the abducted passengers. Despite the collapse of her experiments, Fitz remains in New York, masquerading as a therapist named Ellen Ragier to spy on passenger Saanvi Bahl (Parveen Kaur) and her research.
Upon discovering Fitz’s deception, Saanvi attempts to outwit her, but Fitz anticipates the move and ends their sessions, having already stolen Saanvi’s findings. When they next encounter, Fitz bluntly tells Saanvi she has nothing left to gain from her.
Nevertheless, Saanvi confronts Fitz once more. Despite being dismissed as “an insect on the bottom of my shoe,” Saanvi administers a toxin to Fitz, inducing anaphylaxis. Saanvi declares that Fitz now faces a countdown to her demise, paralleling the passengers’ own fate, though hers is imminent. Fitz, skeptical that Saanvi will allow her to die, tries to grab the antidote, but the vial shatters. In her final moments, Fitz reveals there is no cure for the Callings.
How does the Major die?
Despite her ruthless demeanor toward Flight 828’s passengers, Fitz reveals a softer side with her daughter Sarah and even Saanvi. While manipulating Saanvi in her guise as Ellen Ragier, she also offers genuine help for her anxiety, and Sarah’s affection for her mother is evident. When “Manifest” concludes with a timeline reset, Fitz finds herself resurrected, seemingly uninterested in the passengers’ fate.
However, the ever-determined Saanvi finds Fitz again, and though Fitz calls her “an insect on the bottom of my shoe,” Saanvi manages to dose her with a poison that induces anaphylaxis. As Saanvi explains, now Fitz has an expiration date just like the passengers, though Fitz’s is a lot sooner. Fitz doesn’t believe that Saanvi will let her die. They struggle for the cure that Saanvi brought with her, and the syringe shatters on the ground. Before she dies, Fitz tells Saanvi that there is no cure for the Callings.
While Fitz is cold and uncaring to the passengers of Flight 828, she shows her softer side to her adult daughter, Sarah, and even to Saanvi. Although she manipulates Saanvi while posing as Ellen Ragier, she also helps her with her anxiety, plus Sarah seems to love her. When the timeline resets at the end of “Manifest,” Fitz is restored to life and seems to no longer have any interest in the passengers.
