In a shocking turn of events that has sent ripples through Moscow, Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, a prominent figure in the Russian Armed Forces, lost his life when an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle. This tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday morning in southern Moscow, as confirmed by investigators.

The Russian Investigative Committee, through its spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko, has stated that the attack claimed the life of Lt. Gen. Sarvarov, who held the significant position of head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff. The general succumbed to his injuries following the explosion, which has been described as a deliberate act.

Petrenko further elaborated on the investigation’s progress, indicating that multiple leads are being explored to uncover the perpetrators behind this heinous crime. One prominent theory under consideration is the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services, suggesting a possible geopolitical angle to the assassination.

This unsettling event occurred around 7 a.m. on Yaseneva Street, where local news sources reported the car’s explosion in a parking lot with Sarvarov inside. The incident has undoubtedly heightened tensions and raised questions about security measures within the heart of Russia’s capital.

“Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko said.

Russian news outlets reported that a car exploded in a parking lot on Moscow’s Yaseneva Street with the driver inside at approximately 7 a.m.

Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for a similar attack against a high-ranking Russian soldier in December 2024. Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the chief of the military’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment building a day after Kyiv leveled criminal charges against him. His assistant, Ilya Polikarpov, was also killed.
