Drivers are urged to take particular care on New South Wales roads during the holiday break as double demerits come into force.

Starting tomorrow, December 24, and continuing until Sunday, January 4, stricter penalties will be enforced.

During this period, double demerit points will be issued for infractions related to speeding, mobile phone usage, and not wearing seatbelts or motorcycle helmets.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley emphasized that while law enforcement will be actively monitoring the roads throughout the holiday season, the responsibility for road safety ultimately lies with motorists.

“Every decision made on the road has its repercussions,” Catley stated.

She urged drivers to be accountable for their actions to prevent putting themselves and others in danger.

Assistant Commissioner David Driver, in charge of Traffic and Highway Patrol, highlighted that the decisions drivers make can be the deciding factor in whether families are reunited happily or face tragedy.

“Christmas and the New Year is traditionally a time to celebrate and enjoy time with loved ones. We want all people who to set out on our roads to get to their destination safely,” Driver said.

“Every road user has a moral and legal responsibility to use the roads without putting others at risk and no one wants to be saying ‘sorry’ after a crash because then it is too late.”
