In a tragic incident in Iowa, a mother has been accused of leaving her 3-year-old son in a hot garage, leading to his death.

Tiffany Huff Holmes, 41, now faces charges of child endangerment resulting in death, according to court documents. The unfortunate event took place on June 28 at a residence in the 24000 block of Hawthorn Drive in Bondurant, a suburb near Des Moines, as reported by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The criminal complaint alleges that Holmes “knowingly” left her son unattended for a duration that resulted in hyperthermia, which ultimately caused his death. Furthermore, it is claimed that she was consuming alcohol while being the “sole caregiver” for the child, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed.

The Des Moines Register reports that an application for a search warrant suggests the child likely suffered from overheating in the enclosed garage, as temperatures soared into the low 90s that day. Holmes reportedly admitted to taking a nap but was uncertain about the duration of her sleep.

Upon waking, she discovered her son seated in a lawn chair in the garage. His lips had turned blue, and he was described as “hot to the touch” and “extremely sweaty,” according to the warrant. Despite these alarming signs, she allegedly delayed calling 911 for about five to ten minutes. When she did contact emergency services, dispatchers instructed her to move the child indoors and perform CPR, which she subsequently did.

Authorities arrived quickly at the scene, but despite their efforts, the child could not be revived and was pronounced dead by paramedics. Investigators reportedly discovered a nearly empty bottle of vodka in the home. Holmes claimed she consumed the alcohol after finding her son unresponsive.

According to the warrant, the boy’s father said the victim would not go into the garage and could not open doors, particularly the one in the garage, which was broken and had to be lifted to be opened. The father also said Holmes had abused alcohol for about five years and was not allowed to drink it.

Holmes turned herself in to the Polk County Jail on Sunday. She’s being held on a $1 million bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Jan. 2.
