Authorities have reported that Roberts, alongside two 15-year-old accomplices—a boy and a girl—assaulted a 62-year-old passenger on the Cicero Avenue bus on Tuesday, December 16.

The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. on the 700 block of South Cicero Avenue, as the bus was approaching the I-290 from Roosevelt Road.

Due to the severity of the attack, the victim has remained hospitalized with extensive injuries, according to the Chicago Police Department. The victim’s nephew, Tavarris Harvey, shared cherished photographs from better days with ABC7.

Harvey revealed to ABC7 that his uncle, Larry Gilkey, sustained critical head injuries during the assault and had to be placed in a medically induced coma.

“He’s awake now. He’s able to communicate very little. He doesn’t remember a lot. He doesn’t know how he got where he is,” he said.

Harvey says the doctors told him his uncle will have to undergo rehab. And whenever he returns home, he will need daily assistance.

Roberts and the teens are each facing multiple felony battery charges.
