Woman shot dead in daughter’s Harlem apartment had been staying there since recent breakup

A woman, who had recently moved into her daughter’s Harlem apartment after ending a long-term relationship, was tragically shot and killed, her family disclosed on Wednesday.

Basilisa Negron was found fatally shot in the bathroom of her eldest daughter’s residence on West 141st Street, near Malcolm X Boulevard, around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police reports.

Her brother, who had not seen Negron in about a year, shared that she had intended to visit him soon in Pennsylvania, a heartwarming reunion that will now never happen.

“She planned to visit my home after Christmas,” said her brother, Jay Romero, 44. Another daughter had planned to visit Pennsylvania with her newborn to see Negron.

Negron was a mother to seven children, three of whom she shared with the boyfriend she had recently left. She also had four granddaughters, the eldest being 11. The daughter with whom she was staying was from an earlier relationship, according to Romero.

“She was devoted to her children. A free spirit who always wanted the best for her kids, her grandkids, and the entire family,” said her 43-year-old sister-in-law, who wished to remain anonymous.

“She went beyond expectations for her kids, helping them out, buying them stuff. She was there for them when they needed anything or had a problem.”

Cops have not yet publicly identified a person of interest in her slaying.

“[Her daughter] wasn’t there. She actually went to the store, and that’s when [the shooter] broke in the house and killed her,” Romero said.

The daughter came home to find her mother dead.

“She’s pretty broken,” the sister-in-law said. “Every time she closes her eyes she just sees her mother there.”

Romero called his sister a devoted and loving sibling and mother.

Negron was the oldest of her siblings.

“She was a loving person,” Romero said. “She’s always trying to help people. She’s always doing whatever she can. Even if she had the last dollar, she would have gave it to you just to help you out.”

Negron ran a custom shirts business, her sister-in-law said.

“It was creative,” she said. “If you had a party and you want a custom shirt, she used to do it.”

“She was a great mom to her kids. Even though they were grown and they had their partners and everything, she was always in their lives,” she added. “She was the kind of mom that she had to speak to her kids every day. If she didn’t see them personally, she had to speak to them.”

The sister-in-law said her family is taking the loss hard.

“My husband is broken,” she said. “I’m trying to keep everyone positive.”
