It’s a very happy holiday for a lucky lottery player in the US state of Arkansas, who nabbed a $US1.8 billion ($2.7 billion) Powerball jackpot on Christmas Eve (Christmas Day AEDT).
Last minute ticket sales in Wednesday’s draw pushed the jackpot in America to $US1.817 billion – with a cash option of $US834.9 million ($1.2 billion) – making it the second-largest US lottery jackpot ever, Powerball said in a statement.

The latest Powerball drawing revealed the numbers 4, 25, 31, 52, and 59, with the red Powerball number being 19. The Power Play multiplier was set at 2.

Following this draw, the Powerball jackpot is slated to reset to $20 million USD, which is approximately $30 million AUD, for the upcoming Saturday drawing.

Powerball is renowned for producing some of the largest jackpots in American history, including the staggering $2.04 billion USD prize back in 2022, which translates to about $3.04 billion AUD.

Winners of the jackpot are presented with two payout options. They can either choose an annuitized payment plan, which starts with an initial payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, or opt for a single lump sum payment.

The annuitized plan incorporates interest over time, yet it is observed that the majority of winners prefer the lump sum option.
