Nick Bolkus, a “formidable and tireless” former federal Labor minister, peacefully passed away on Christmas morning.

Bolkus made history as the first Greek Australian to hold a cabinet position, serving under the Hawke and Keating administrations. He became one of the longest-tenured senators from South Australia.

During his time in government, he was the minister for consumer affairs and also assisted the treasurer in overseeing prices and administrative services under Prime Minister Hawke.

Bolkus further contributed as the shadow attorney-general and as the minister for justice, environment, and heritage.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas highlighted Bolkus’s pride in a significant decision that allowed tens of thousands of Chinese citizens to remain in Australia after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. This move was described as being “grounded in humanity and moral leadership,” continuing to have a lasting impact today.

Malinauskas added that Australia has lost a devoted public servant, and the Labor Party has lost a remarkable advocate.

“Nick was deeply respected across the political divide,” he said.

“He was a formidable intellect, a tireless advocate for the Labor Party, and a generous mentor to many. He was much loved by his family, colleagues and friends.

“We honour his service and thank him for all he gave to our state and our country. May he rest in peace.”

Bolkus is survived by his wife Mary, and three children, Aria, Mikayla and Nick.
