Sailors battling it out in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race performed a special honour to the 15 people killed in the Bondi shooting.

As 129 yachts glide past Bondi Beach, each will release rose petals from their sterns, creating a poignant tribute as they sail south from Sydney Harbour.

Unfortunately, one yacht had to withdraw before the race even began.

During the mandatory Race Briefing, Sam Haynes, Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, detailed the tribute plans, according to event organisers.

“The tribute in response to the tragic events at Bondi has resonated deeply,” Haynes explained to the fleet. “It has been warmly received by the Jewish community and has garnered international recognition, as well as touching hearts across Australia.”

The petals for this symbolic gesture were provided by Mr. Roses, Haynes mentioned.

Organisers noted, “For many participants, this moment will serve as a reflective pause in a race typically defined by speed, competition, and endurance.”

“Just hours after the start, as spinnakers are hoisted and the fleet accelerates south, the scattering of petals will briefly shift attention away from tactics and weather to remembrance and solidarity.”

It’s the 80th year of the Boxing Day race, which sees crews battle it out over 628 nautical miles from Sydney in NSW to Hobart in Tasmania.

The race started just after 1pm.

Sailors have been placed on high alert, with officials warning of likely injuries during what is predicted to be a treacherous first night at sea.
