WASHINGTON – On New Year’s Eve, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation to postpone the escalation of tariffs on certain home goods for a year, attributing the delay to ongoing trade negotiations.

Trump’s decision, signed on Wednesday, maintains the existing 25% tariff on items such as upholstered furniture, which was enacted in September. However, it postpones the planned rise to a 30% tariff on these goods and a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and vanities for an additional year.

The anticipated tariff hikes were initially set to be implemented on January 1. These measures are part of the president’s broader strategy to impose tariffs on imported products, aiming to address trade disparities and related concerns.

According to Trump, the tariffs on furniture are crucial to strengthening American manufacturing sectors and ensuring national security.

This postponement marks another chapter in Trump’s tariff saga, characterized by sudden announcements, unexpected delays, and occasional retractions over the past year.
