In a tragic turn of events, a Florida woman stands accused of murdering her 97-year-old mother after the elderly woman was denied access to medically assisted suicide. Martha Jo Blake, aged 66, faces a first-degree murder charge following the death of her mother, Patricia Blake. The incident occurred in their shared residence in Palm Beach, Florida, and was reported on December 26, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Authorities arrived at the scene that morning to find Patricia Blake’s body lying on her back, shrouded with a sheet. Although Martha claimed she had not interacted with her mother since 10 p.m. the previous evening, one deputy reportedly found her behavior suspicious. The affidavit noted Martha’s reluctance to leave her mother’s side during the investigation. Further examination revealed discoloration on Patricia’s face and circular marks on her neck, raising additional concerns.

The autopsy conducted later unveiled critical evidence pointing to strangulation, including internal neck bleeding and a fractured vertebra. According to the sheriff’s office and WPBF reports, Patricia also exhibited eye hemorrhaging, which is consistent with suffocation.

Upon securing a search warrant, law enforcement officers revisited the home to engage Martha in further conversation. During this interaction, Martha disclosed to deputies that she and her mother had consulted a doctor in Maine 18 months prior about the possibility of pursuing medically-assisted suicide, as stated in the affidavit.

Investigators revealed that Patricia was deemed ineligible for Maine’s “Death with Dignity” law, as none of her health conditions were categorized as terminal. This revelation sheds light on the possible motivations behind this somber and complex case.

According to investigators, Martha said that Patricia did not qualify for Maine’s “Death with Dignity” law because none of her health ailments were considered terminal, authorities said.

Martha allegedly told investigators, according to the arrest documents, that her mom told her multiple times that she “she did not want to live.” They had also discussed the possibility of using pills, but concluded they didn’t have access to anything lethal.

While searching the apartment, detectives took a pair of socks found inside a garbage bag on the front porch into evidence. They also collected Patricia’s bedding and Martha’s clothing, according to the affidavit.
