WICKET! Smith falls for 46, England 6-323

Justin Langer didn’t hold back when he described Jamie Smith’s shot during a Test cricket match as “one of the dumbest” ever seen. Though perhaps a tad exaggerated, it’s undeniable that Smith’s attempt was far from impressive.

Smith found himself tangled up as he tried to step back and send a short ball from Marnus Labuschagne soaring. The ill-fated effort came just moments before lunch, against a bowler known more for his batting prowess than his bowling skills.

With time ticking down to the lunch break, and Joe Root standing strong at 129 not out on the opposite end, Smith had every reason to play it safe. Instead, he opted to swing at what could hardly be classified as a bouncer, sending it straight to deep cover and making the walk of shame past his teammates on the way to the dressing room.

Lawrence Booth, offering his perspective, questioned whether this was Smith’s poorest performance of the series. Booth notes the timing was particularly poor, suggesting that Smith should have simply aimed to see out the session before regrouping after the break. It was a shocking decision that drew a collective sigh from observers and team members alike.

Was that the worst of the series from Jamie Smith? Lunch is approaching, Marnus Labuschagne is bowling his medium-pace dobbers and Joe Root is 129 not out at the other end. Reach the interval, then go again after the break. Instead, Smith slaps what I’d struggle to call a bouncer to deep cover, and has to walk past his team-mates on the pavilion balcony en route to the dressing-room. A shocking shot.
