A 24-year-old individual is facing serious legal charges, including 15 counts of murder and committing a terrorist act. These charges stem from a tragic incident that occurred on December 14 at an event known as Chanukah by the Sea.
This horrific attack resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals and left over 40 others injured. The suspect, Akram, sustained severe injuries during a confrontation with law enforcement, while his father, Sajid, lost his life in the exchange.
Following the incident, Akram spent nine days receiving medical treatment in a hospital before being transferred to a correctional facility in Sydney. Reports suggest that he has been held in isolation within the jail’s hospital unit since his arrival.
A spokesperson for the New South Wales government emphasized that ensuring community safety remains their utmost priority, underscoring the importance of addressing such threats with a firm hand.
It is understood he spent his time at the jail in isolation in the hospital unit.
A NSW government said community safety remains a “top priority”.
“Corrective Services NSW takes its responsibility to appropriately manage serious offenders incredibly seriously,” the spokesperson said.
“The High Risk Management Correctional Centre is the most secure prison in the state, and is equipped to accommodate inmates who pose the highest levels of risk.
“We are not able to comment on the specific circumstances of individual inmates.”
