'Serious questions' over Melbourne sinkhole, tunnelling expert says
The Melbourne sinkhole that opened up near a major tunnelling project poses “serious questions”, an expert says.

On Monday afternoon, a collapsed section of turf at AJ Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg caught the attention of a curious crowd. The unusual sight drew numerous onlookers eager to witness the spectacle.

Duncan Elliott, CEO of the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA), explained that two tunnel boring machines were currently operating underground close to the affected area, as part of the ongoing North East Link project.

Locals posted images of the sinkhole to social site Reddit.(9News)

Despite the potential for the sinkhole to widen, Elliott noted that it had not done so yet and emphasized that no injuries had occurred. He humorously remarked that if he had to contend with a sinkhole, this would be the type he’d prefer in his backyard.

“It’s more of a ‘cute and cuddly’ kind of sinkhole,” he quipped. “Let’s hope it stays that way.”

A representative from the North East Link confirmed to 9news.com.au that they were aware of the sinkhole’s presence near the tunneling activities.

A North East Link spokesperson yesterday told 9news.com.au they were aware of the sinkhole “in the vicinity” of the tunnelling operation.

“The area has been secured and crews are closely monitoring the site and surrounding areas – and we strongly advise people to avoid the area while investigations into the cause are underway,” they said.

“No injuries have been reported and there is no immediate threat to the community or residential properties.”
