In Texas, a young man faces accusations of fatally assaulting an elderly gentleman and likening the violent act to a sports maneuver.

Trevon Qu’Shaun Davis, 23, stands charged with first-degree murder following the death of 81-year-old Charles Henry Bell, as documented in court filings reviewed by Law&Crime. Davis made a court appearance recently, with a jury trial slated for the coming month.

The incident occurred on November 3, 2024, as Davis walked down Gentry Parkway in Tyler with a woman he was dating. During a heated argument, Davis reportedly pushed the woman, as detailed in an arrest affidavit accessed by local CBS affiliate KYTX. Bell, who was strolling with a companion, noticed the disturbance and attempted to defuse the situation.

The older man reportedly advised Davis to “Stop yelling at [her] and leave [her] alone,” according to ABC affiliate KLTV.

Davis allegedly reacted negatively to Bell’s intervention.

According to the affidavit, Davis began assaulting Bell by delivering multiple punches to his face and head. He purportedly kicked Bell in the head as well, later telling authorities he did so with force, likening it to a “hard, like soccer” kick.

However, the defendant reportedly maintained that Bell hit him first with his cane and slapped him.

With Bell on the ground bleeding, Davis and the woman are said to have run away, hiding in a nearby Valvoline shop. Police officers caught up with them there and arrested Davis.

Bell had injuries to his face and a hemorrhage, KYTX reported. He was brought to an area hospital, and Davis was charged with injury to an elderly person. However, about a week later, Bell died, and Davis’ charge was upgraded.

According to KLTV, both prosecutors and the defense said they could come to a resolution on the case before the trial scheduled for Feb. 23.
