A man from Florida, who admitted to attempting to murder his spouse, is now serving time behind bars.

George Hachey, 75, accepted a no-contest plea on December 16, 2025, over three years after he attempted to fatally stab his 71-year-old wife, Margery Greene. According to Villages-News.com, the assault occurred shortly after Greene had initiated divorce proceedings on September 28, 2022. Although Greene survived the brutal attack, it was followed by Hachey’s unsuccessful attempt to take his own life.

Legal papers obtained by Law&Crime detail how Greene managed to call 911 at 7:40 a.m., reporting the violent incident. She informed the dispatcher that she suspected Hachey had also harmed himself. Deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived at their residence in The Villages, Florida, discovering Greene on the bedroom floor, suffering from multiple stab wounds to her legs, abdomen, and chest. Desperately, she pleaded with the first responding deputy, “Don’t let me die.”

Hachey was discovered in the living room, seated in a recliner with a pocketknife in his lap. He was “covered in blood” and unresponsive, though still breathing. Both were promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention.

When questioned by a deputy about any exchange with Hachey, Greene recounted him saying, “You’ve ruined my life, and now I’m going to end yours.”

At the hospital, a detective spoke with Hachey, who confessed, “I just tried killing my wife. I don’t want help, I want to die.”

Hachey was sentenced on Dec. 16, 2025, to 18 years in prison, with credit for time served. According to the Florida Department of Corrections, where he is now in custody, his scheduled release date is in September 2040.
