Critical clue led police to suspect Chicago doctor in deaths of Ohio dentist, wife

The former spouse of an Ohio dentist’s wife, who was tragically slain in a double homicide, is set to appear in an Illinois courtroom on Monday afternoon as the process for his extradition begins.

Michael David McKee, aged 39, faces accusations of fatally shooting a couple in Columbus, Ohio, as indicated by police and court documents. Authorities were alerted to a residence in Columbus’ Weinland Park area around 10 a.m. on December 30, where they discovered 37-year-old Spencer Tepe and 39-year-old Monique Tepe deceased from gunshot injuries. McKee is identified as Monique’s former husband.

McKee was detained at the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois shortly before noon on Saturday, as per jail documentation. He is charged with two counts of murder in Ohio concerning the deaths of Spencer and Monique.

Ohio court records reveal that Monique initiated divorce proceedings in 2017 after marrying McKee on August 22, 2015. Since 2020, McKee has resided in multiple states, including Virginia, Nevada, and Illinois, according to public records. Recently, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois, and practices as a vascular surgeon in the Rockford, Illinois, vicinity.

McKee is scheduled to make an appearance in a Winnebago County court in Illinois on Monday at 1:30 p.m., as proceedings related to his extradition to Ohio are anticipated to unfold.

Charging documents indicate police were able to identify McKee by linking him to a car that arrived in the Tepes’ neighborhood shortly before the murders and left just after the homicide. The car was then located in Rockford, Illinois, and police found evidence it belonged to McKee.

READ THE CHARGING DOCUMENTS:

Prior to McKee’s arrest, Columbus police released surveillance video showing a “person of interest” walking in the alley near the Tepes’ house in the early morning hours of Dec. 30.

A man could be seen walking slowly in what appeared to be a dark coat and light-colored pants.

Spencer and Monique Tepe were found dead on Dec. 30 at around 10:00 a.m., when a friend went to the couple’s house and told a 911 operator that he could see a body inside.

“There’s a body,” the caller says. “Our friend wasn’t answering his phone. We just did a wellness check. We just came here, and he appears dead. He’s laying next to his bed, off of his bed in this blood. I can’t get closer to see more than that.”

The couple was killed one month short of celebrating their five-year wedding anniversary, Rob Misleh, Spencer’s brother-in-law, told WSYX.
