Long Island HS basketball player, 15, punched by fan, 36, during brawl at game

A Suffolk County resident is facing legal charges following an altercation during a high school basketball game. The incident occurred during a match between Half Hollow Hills West High School and Comsewogue.

Tensions flared in the final seconds of the game, leading to a confrontation between players from the opposing teams. Amidst the chaos, a spectator allegedly entered the fray and struck a 15-year-old player from Comsewogue.

The individual involved has been identified as 36-year-old Jeffery Vernot. He is now facing charges of third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, as detailed by Newsday.

Video footage, broadcast by News 12 Long Island, captures the moment the on-court scuffle erupted. It shows three teenagers engaged in pushing and shoving, while referees attempted to calm the situation. As the skirmish escalated, more players rushed to the scene.

In the midst of the commotion, coaches, security personnel, and spectators also moved toward the brawl. Vernot is seen interacting with a Comsewogue player, who is later observed appearing to be in pain.

The incident unfolded with just 44 seconds remaining on the game clock, while Half Hollow Hills West led 63-52. Following the disruption, the game was not completed, as both teams exited the gymnasium, according to Newsday.

Vernot was issued an appearance ticket and he will go before a judge on Jan. 30, News 12 Long Island reported.

The Comsewogue School District said in a statement to the outlet that it was “deeply disappointed” by the incident and the Half Hollow Hills Central School District said that it “condemns violence” and that it was “cooperating fully” with Suffolk PD’s investigation.

“We remain committed to implementing appropriate measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future,” John O’Farrell, superintendent of schools, said in a statement.

Section XI said that the people who violated the policy of fighting and coming off the bench will be supsended two games.
