The 5 shingles red flags to know as rashes ‘surge by 50%’

As the winter chill sets in, the number of individuals experiencing sudden, painful rashes and nerve discomfort is on the rise. Recent data from Superdrug Online Doctor indicates a 50% surge in consultations for shingles. This condition stems from the reactivation of the chickenpox virus and affects those who have previously had chickenpox.

Shingles predominantly occurs in older adults and individuals with compromised immune systems. Dr. Babak Ashrafi of Superdrug’s Online Doctor explains, “The onset of shingles can be surprising; many find themselves waking up to a burning or tingling sensation, soon followed by a rapidly worsening rash. Colder months see a spike in cases as immune systems face additional challenges.”

Factors such as stress, lack of sleep, and concurrent infections during winter can trigger shingles by weakening the immune system.

The NHS highlights that initial symptoms of shingles include a tingling or painful sensation on the skin, accompanied by headaches or a general feeling of malaise.

A rash typically emerges a few days later, often on the chest and abdomen, although it can manifest in other areas.

Unusually, a shingles rash tends to affect only one side of the body, owing to the virus’s reactivation along a single nerve pathway.

Superdrug Online Doctor highlighted five cases in which more urgent medical attention may be needed, rather than routine self-care. These are if:

  • the rash is on or near the eye
  • pain is severe or spreading
  • you have a weakened immune system
  • you are pregnant
  • or symptoms are worsening rapidly

Superdrug Online Doctor offers a quick online assessment and photo-diagnosis service, allowing clinicians to review remotely. This service provides access to antiviral treatment where clinically appropriate, enabling patients to receive care without waiting for a GP appointment.

Dr Ashrafi added: “The key message is, don’t wait it out. The sooner you start treatment, the better the outcome.”
