An Australian expat and trans woman says the United Kingdom refuses to acknowledge the correct gender on her passport and other documents unless she jumps through complicated hoops and pays thousands of dollars.
Jessica Evans, 57, transitioned six years ago – a difficult journey which included a relatively straightforward bureaucratic process in South Australia.

Evans briefly pondered the idea of renouncing her UK citizenship, but ultimately, she could not bring herself to forfeit the rights it affords her, such as eligibility for a pension.

The thought of needing to travel back to Manchester in an emergency poses a dilemma for Evans, as she would be compelled to use a male passport to make the journey.

“If necessity calls, I would indeed do it; my mother’s wellbeing takes precedence over my pride,” she remarked. “However, it’s a choice I shouldn’t have to make.”

Driven by her own experiences, Evans is determined to address this bureaucratic hurdle so that future transgender individuals who choose to relocate to Australia won’t face similar obstacles.

“When you come out as transgender and declare your true self to the world, there’s no room for half measures,” Evans asserted.

“If you’re trans and you decide to say to the world, this is who I am, you can’t go in halfway,” Evans said.

“You can’t start if you are still living under your old gender name.”
