Construction crane falls onto moving train in Thailand, killing at least 29

A tragic incident unfolded in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday when a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train, resulting in a catastrophic derailment that claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals. The disaster left 64 others injured, as emergency responders tirelessly combed through the wreckage, providing urgent medical assistance.

This accident took place on a segment of a major high-speed rail network that aims to link China with various parts of Southeast Asia. The railway project is part of a broader infrastructure initiative in the region.

According to the Nakhon Ratchasima provincial public relations office, the crane was being used to construct an elevated section of the railway. It fell as the train was en route from Bangkok to the province of Ubon Ratchathani, leading to the tragic derailment.

Images shared in Thai media depicted both white and dark smoke billowing from the accident site, with construction machinery precariously dangling between two concrete pillars.

Footage from the public broadcaster ThaiPBS revealed rescue personnel atop overturned train carriages, some of which bore large, jagged openings. Debris from the crane littered the tracks, while paramedics were seen administering first aid to the injured passengers.

Reports from Thai media indicated that the train consisted of three carriages, with the last two suffering the most significant damage in the accident.

Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan said 195 people were on board the train. He said he ordered an investigation.

The elevated segment that collapsed is a part of a Thai-Chinese high-speed railway project linking the national capital Bangkok to the northeastern province of Nong Khai, bordering Laos. The two-stage rail project has a total investment cost of more than 520 billion baht ($16.8 billion) and is associated with an ambitious plan to connect China with Southeast Asia under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

In August 2024, a railway tunnel on the planned route, also in Nakhon Ratchasima, collapsed, killing three workers. Days of heavy rainfall were believed to have been a factor in the collapse.
