Cosmos Jarvis' Peaky Blinders Character Explained

The television series “Peaky Blinders” introduced viewers to a host of talented actors, most notably Cillian Murphy in the role of Thomas ‘Tommy’ Shelby. Yet, one performer who might have flown under the radar initially is Cosmo Jarvis. While Jarvis is recognized for his performances in “Shōgun” as Jack Blackthorne and in Netflix’s 2022 adaptation of “Persuasion,” he took on a deeply poignant role in “Peaky Blinders” as Barney, a character who makes his appearance in the show’s fifth season.

Barney’s connection to Tommy dates back to their time together in World War I, where Tommy served as Barney’s commanding officer in the marines. During the war, Barney struggled with hearing voices, a condition that affected his emotional state and could be worsened by the stress of combat. Although Tommy had a calming influence on him, Barney ended up in a mental health institution after the war due to legal troubles. Despite these challenges, Barney was renowned for his impeccable marksmanship, a skill that Tommy would later seek out during the unfolding events of “Peaky Blinders.”

The series presents a dramatized version of Winston Churchill, portrayed by Neil Maskell, who enlists Tommy to neutralize Oswald Mosley, played by Sam Claflin. Mosley’s burgeoning fascist political movement poses a significant threat to the nation, and eliminating him could halt this dangerous momentum. To carry out this task, Tommy decides he needs Barney’s expertise.

Tommy orchestrates Barney’s escape from the mental institution, crafting an assassination plan that shields him from suspicion. The strategy involves Barney utilizing his sharpshooting skills to assassinate Mosley during a speech at a rally. Tommy’s presence on stage with Mosley ensures that no suspicion would fall on him or the Peaky Blinders. Barney agrees to the plan, though it is evident that he continues to grapple with the psychological issues from his wartime experiences.

Barney is the key to the Oswald Mosley assassination plot

Tragically, Barney’s story concludes when, just as he is about to take the crucial shot, he is killed by an unidentified assailant. This abrupt turn of events derails the assassination plot and leaves Tommy devastated by the loss of his old comrade. The season ends on a somber note, setting the stage for Tommy’s journey in the series’ final season.

However, Barney’s story ends tragically when, right as he is going to take the shot, he’s killed by a different, unknown individual. This stops the assassination attempt in its tracks, and Tommy takes the failure hard, especially since it’s rooted in the death of his old friend. It’s a heartbreaking way to end Season 5, but sets up Tommy’s story for the final season of “Peaky Blinders.”
