In a recent development, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced via social media that the US Coast Guard had intercepted the Motor Tanker Veronica early Thursday. The event, which is drawing significant attention, underscores ongoing efforts by US authorities to enforce sanctions and maintain law and order on the high seas.

She said the ship had previously passed through Venezuelan waters and was operating in defiance of US President Donald Trump‘s “established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean”.

Before this intervention, the Veronica had last communicated its position on January 3, when it was anchored off the coast of Aruba, near Venezuela’s primary oil terminal. At that time, data indicated that the vessel was partly loaded with crude oil.

The Veronica is currently registered under the flag of Guyana and is believed to be part of a shadow fleet involved in transporting oil in defiance of US sanctions. This network of vessels often operates clandestinely to evade international monitoring and restrictions.

Intriguingly, records reveal that this ship has previously operated under different identities. It was formerly known as the Galileo and is linked to ownership and management by a Russian company. Additionally, it shares a registration number with a tanker formerly named Pegas, which had been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department for transporting illicit Russian oil.

Noem, along with military officials, has portrayed the seizure as a testament to the US’s commitment to enforcing international law. She stated that such actions demonstrate that “there is no outrunning or escaping American justice.”

However, within the broader context of US policy, some officials from the Trump administration have acknowledged that these operations also aim to generate revenue. This financial strategy is intended to support the rehabilitation of Venezuela’s struggling oil industry and aid in reviving its economy.

Trump met with executives from oil companies last week to discuss his goal of investing $100 billion in Venezuela to repair and upgrade its oil production and distribution. His administration has said it expects to sell at least 30 million to 50 million barrels of sanctioned Venezuelan oil.
