Wes Moore: Working with ICE to Do Arrests in Jail Will 'Make the Situation Worse'

During a recent episode of CNN’s “The Source,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore weighed in on the debate surrounding ICE’s potential collaboration with police in Minneapolis. When asked if such cooperation would lead to safer arrests by apprehending individuals directly in jails, Moore argued that this strategy could actually exacerbate the problem.

The conversation was sparked after host Kaitlan Collins played a clip featuring Border Czar Tom Homan. In the video, Homan criticized Minneapolis for being a sanctuary city, suggesting that allowing ICE access to local jails would enable them to safely detain undocumented individuals. He asserted that in non-sanctuary areas, a single agent could arrest a criminal without endangering the community, whereas in sanctuary cities, ICE operations become riskier, requiring a full team to apprehend suspects who might possess weapons.

Collins turned to Moore, noting that Maryland is not classified as a sanctuary state, and inquired whether he believed the administration’s stance had merit if Minneapolis police cooperated with ICE. Moore firmly disagreed, stating, “No, because what he just said was not just factually incorrect, it’s operationally foolish.” He emphasized that Maryland adheres to constitutional policing and prioritizes public safety, ensuring that laws are strictly followed.

Governor Moore highlighted Maryland’s proactive approach to law enforcement, particularly against violent offenders, boasting significant reductions in violent crime since his tenure began. He attributed this success to Maryland’s commitment to constitutional policing and collaboration with local communities, which he believes enhances crime-solving and community safety. He dismissed Homan’s remarks as not only inaccurate but also potentially harmful, warning that such rhetoric could worsen the existing challenges. Moore’s comments underline the importance of balancing law enforcement with community trust and constitutional rights.
