The NFL is celebrating six decades of the Super Bowl with a special event featuring a local music icon.

Green Day is set to kick off the festivities for Super Bowl 60 with an opening ceremony on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, according to an announcement made by the league on Sunday. This performance aims to honor the championship’s rich history, as the band will be part of a tribute that introduces generations of Super Bowl MVPs onto the field.

Originating from the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area, the band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool are expected to deliver a medley of their most famous hits during the ceremony.

“We’re incredibly excited to have the opportunity to open Super Bowl 60 right here in our own backyard!” exclaimed lead singer Armstrong. “It’s a true honor to welcome the MVPs who have shaped the game and to kick off the night for fans across the globe. Let’s make some noise and have fun!”

The opening ceremony will be broadcast live at 3 p.m. Pacific Time across NBC, Telemundo, Peacock, and Universo.

“Marking 60 years of Super Bowl history with Green Day, a band with local roots, while paying tribute to the NFL legends who have defined this sport, is a truly impactful way to start Super Bowl LX,” stated Tim Tubito, the league’s senior director of event and game presentation. “In collaboration with NBC Sports, we aim to craft a memorable celebration for fans in the stadium and worldwide.”

The opening ceremony will take place ahead of the pregame entertainment, in which Charlie Puth is to perform the national anthem, Brandi Carlile will sing “America the Beautiful” and Coco Jones will deliver “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
