Among the key participants is the DuSable Black History Museum, which is commemorating its 64th anniversary with a day dedicated to service, connection, and inspiration. As the oldest independent African American museum in the nation, DuSable extends an open invitation to the public, urging them to join in a celebration of love, service, and positive impact.

The museum’s event, designed to foster community spirit, encourages volunteers to support those less fortunate by donating essential winter items. Participants are asked to bring new hats, gloves, scarves, hoodies, coats, socks, and blankets to help those in need during the colder months.

This day of service begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 6 p.m. at the museum’s location at 740 E 56th Place. It’s a chance for the community to not only remember the ideals of Dr. King but to actively embody them through practical acts of kindness and solidarity.

Volunteers are encouraged to support those in need by donating new, warm winter items, including hats, gloves, scarves, hoodies, coats, socks and blankets.

It starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. at 740 E 56th Place.

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition will host a reception to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The event is themed “The Beloved Community,” and will celebrate MLK’s legacy and Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr.

Chicago’s very own Leo High School Boys’ Choir will perform.

Columbia College Chicago Historian and Associate Professor Robert Hanserd joined ABC7 on MLK Day.
Anson A. Mount III said he was about 9 years old when he attended the emotional event with his father.
