Hollywood legend Shirley MacLaine, 91, makes rare public appearance

Shirley MacLaine made a rare public appearance this week as she ventured out for a meal at Nobu in Malibu.

The 91-year-old iconic actress was captured arriving at the beloved celebrity haunt, exuding a sense of relaxation while basking in the sun. This appearance is a notable event for the generally private MacLaine.

Accompanied by an assistant, MacLaine appeared in high spirits as she entered the beachside restaurant, a popular destination for Hollywood’s elite.

For her daytime outing, the Oscar-winning actress chose a laid-back ensemble, sporting a ‘Bode’s General Store’ t-shirt paired with khaki pants.

This sighting follows a few months after MacLaine was seen at another favorite Malibu locale of hers, Kristy’s Village Cafe.

Despite her illustrious career, the Terms of Endearment star has mostly kept out of the limelight in recent years, making this appearance particularly noteworthy.

MacLaine celebrated her 91st birthday in April and has previously spoken candidly about the habits she credits for her longevity, including decades of dance training that began when she was just three years old.

‘I started my dance training at age three and stopped at about 67. It taught me discipline, loving music, working with people and dealing with pain,’ she previously told People

The veteran star, who is the older sister of fellow Hollywood icon Warren Beatty, has also made it clear she has no intention of slowing down completely.

In recent interviews, MacLaine has expressed gratitude for her health, her friendships and the ability to keep working well into her nineties.

Although her public appearances have become increasingly rare, MacLaine continues to maintain a quiet presence in Malibu, where she is often spotted when not dividing her time at her ranch in New Mexico.

Shirley’s astounding run of screen credits goes all the way back to 1955, when she made her debut – in one of the lead roles – in Alfred Hitchcock’s black comedy The Trouble With Harry, though she had already become a Broadway star with stints in Oklahoma! and The Pajama Game.

‘I was this little pixie out of the chorus that didn’t know what I was doing,’ she told W Magazine in 2017.

Although she later came to believe Hitchcock was more focused on casting ideal actors than shaping their performances, it worked out for her because she was ‘perfect for that character.’

Despite a run of hits and classics in the 1950s and ’60s – including Some Came Running (1958), Ask Any Girl (1959), The Apartment (1960), The Children’s Hour (1961), Irma la Douce (1963), Sweet Charity (1969) and Two Mules For Sister Sara (1970) – it wasn’t until the 1980s that she won her only Oscar in the Best Actress category for the beloved romantic dramedy Terms Of Endearment (1983), which costarred Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson.

The hit film also won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Nicholson.

Some of her later performances include Bewitched (2005), Bernie (2011) and The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (2013).

Although Shirley’s pace has slowed somewhat in recent years, she still averages about a film or TV role per year.

Her most recent appearances were a two-episode guest arc on the acclaimed comedy Only Murders In The Building from 2022, and in 2025 she starred in American Dreamers with Peter Dinklage, though the film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2022.

While speaking to Extra in 2024, Shirley revealed her surprising plans for her 90th birthday.

Rather than having a big blowout, she said she would be ‘be on a set’ in Atlantic City working on a new project.

That work ethic has kept her active in Hollywood for nearly seven decades, but she admitted that things just aren’t like they used to be.

‘The glamour’s gone out a bit, I’m afraid,’ she said of Hollywood and the changes that the rise of streaming services has wrought on it while speaking with Extra. ‘I think it’s entirely different.’
