Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has conceded his government was not able to pass every proposed law in the wake of the Bondi Beach terror attack, before hailing the legislation as the “strongest hate laws” in Australian history.

Albanese acknowledged that the current legislative packages are “less robust than initially proposed,” yet he emphasized they rank among the “most stringent hate laws ever seen in Australia.”

Hate speech and gun reforms explained

The newly introduced hate speech legislation empowers authorities to label certain organizations as “hate groups,” potentially leading to jail sentences for both their members and supporters.

This legal framework introduces aggravated charges for religious or spiritual leaders who incite violence and imposes penalties on those preaching hatred to minors.

Additionally, the reforms grant ministers enhanced authority to deny or revoke visas for individuals promoting hateful or extreme ideologies.

The updated gun laws, which faced opposition from Coalition, One Nation, and United Australia Party senators, aim to restrict firearm imports to Australian citizens.

Moreover, there will be tighter controls on the types of firearms permitted for import, complemented by the establishment of a national gun buyback program.
