Young woman bursts into tears after shopper unleashed racist tirade

A young shopper was left in tears after experiencing a racist outburst from another customer while purchasing art supplies at a Kmart store.

On December 14, last year, TikTok user ‘Mass’ shared a video capturing the aftermath of a heated exchange that took place in a Melbourne store.

‘I attended Kmart to purchase art supplies. While walking down an aisle, a woman had her trolley positioned in a way that blocked access,’ she wrote in the caption.

According to ‘Mass’, the confrontation began when she slightly moved aside to let another shopper pass. Offering a quick, polite smile, she continued on her way, only to be met with a barrage of racist comments from the woman.

The other shopper allegedly remarked, “That’s what happens when we recruit people from your country. You don’t say thank you. You come to our country and don’t learn our ways,” and proceeded with additional derogatory remarks.

Feeling shocked and upset by the encounter, ‘Mass’ chose not to engage or escalate the situation further.

Given the severity of the comments, she decided to document a portion of the incident on video to have a record of what transpired. Witnesses to the incident also reported it to Kmart’s management for further action.

In the video, the woman chastised Mass for not saying ‘thank you’ when she moved her trolley to the side. However, the younger woman replied that she ‘didn’t need’ to thank the woman as her trolley had been blocking the aisle.

The older woman then became angry, with a young man beside her pulling her back and stepping between the women as she pointed and yelled at Mass.

As a Kmart manager approached the pair, the shopper and the young man gestured to Mass, with the woman saying ‘Get her out of my face’.

However, the manager calmly asked the woman and the young man to leave the store, telling them she had called security.

As the pair moved away, Mass could be heard calling after them: ‘I have a right to be in this country. Don’t be racist to me’.

The manager took Mass into a back room as she began to cry. She later wrote that the employee ‘was supportive and attempted to console me’.

‘I note that the manager was a person of colour, and I felt that my experience was taken seriously and not minimised or dismissed,’ she said.

‘Police were contacted and attended the store. I provided a formal statement regarding the incident.’

Victoria Police told Daily Mail they were unable to provide details without a specific location and confirmation an incident had been reported.

‘This experience was humiliating, intimidating, and deeply upsetting,’ Mass said.

‘It occurred in a public place where I should have felt safe. No one should be subjected to racist abuse for simply existing or going about their day.’

Australians were quick to sympathise with Mass in the comments.

‘If my trolley was blocking the aisle then I’m the one apologising, that is common courtesy,’ one person wrote.

Another added: ‘It’s not fair that people are treated like this. Racism is so nasty.’

Others praised the Kmart manager as a ‘sweetheart’ and ‘kind soul’.

Daily Mail has contacted Kmart’s owner, Wesfarmers, for comment.
