In Springtown, Texas, a McDonald’s employee is under scrutiny after allegedly manipulating drive-thru transactions for personal gain. The 19-year-old worker is accused of swiping an extra $10 to $20 from customers using a private device, according to local police reports.

Customers of this Texas branch started noticing unusual charges on their debit cards, leading to the discovery of this scheme. It was reported by WFAA that the young employee would first process the legitimate payment for orders like Big Macs and fries, then covertly swipe the card again with his personal device for additional unauthorized charges.

Authorities took action after a vigilant customer reported these irregularities, culminating in the employee’s arrest. Assistant City Administrator Christina Derr revealed that the fraudulent operations accumulated nearly $700 before being halted.

Derr explained, “He was seen processing valid McDonald’s transactions and subsequently using his phone, where he had set up an application to facilitate these unauthorized charges.” This breach of trust serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in monitoring financial transactions.

The employee was accused of taking almost $700 before his arrest on Sunday, Assistant City Administrator Christina Derr told WFAA.

“He was able to see the suspect using customers’ cards to process their valid McDonald’s transaction and then turning and tapping his phone where an application was set up to be able to process those transactions,” Derr said.

Investigators said they think the fraud happened for only one day, Jan. 18. Police asked customers to check their accounts for any recent visits.

The owner operator of the Springtown McDonald’s, Veronica Ruano, told WFAA that the incident “doesn’t reflect the standards we hold for our restaurant.”

“We worked closely with local authorities and completed a thorough internal review,” Ruano said in a statement. “All affected customers have been fully refunded, and the individual involved is no longer employed at the restaurant. Our commitment to integrity and the trust of our customers remains our top priority.”
