Rose Byrne is celebrating her first-ever Oscar nomination after securing a spot on the shortlist for Best Actress. This recognition marks a significant milestone in her career.

Joining Byrne in the Oscar spotlight is fellow Australian Jacob Elordi, who has received his inaugural nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category.

In a surprising turn, musician Nick Cave has also been nominated for a major award, earning a nod for Best Original Song.

Byrne’s role in the indie film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” has already garnered her numerous accolades, including the Best Actress award at four major pre-Oscar events, one of which was the Golden Globes.

The news of her Oscar nomination reached Byrne in the middle of the night in Australia.

“I was on the verge of falling asleep when [my husband, Bobby Cannavale] started FaceTiming me from New York,” she shared. “I had attempted to stay awake, but it was incredibly late,” she recounted.

“And then he started screaming, it was like ‘They said your name!’ and then my parents came in the room, they’re like ‘Oh my God!’ and then we were all screaming, and that was it. Now I’ve had a shot of adrenaline and I’m wide awake.”

The movie follows the story of Linda (played by Byrne), a therapist navigating the harsh challenges of motherhood.

Director Mary Bronstein told SBS News last year she wanted to “create a portrait of a mother I had never seen before”.

“When I thought about it, I was like: What movie have I ever seen where it centres a woman who happens to have a child, but it’s not about her mothering and it doesn’t judge her and it lets her be an actual human being? That’s written and made by a woman?”

Byrne is up against Jessie Buckley in Hamnet, Kate Hudson in Song Sung Blue, Renate Reinsve in Sentimental Value and Emma Stone in Bugonia.

Elordi’s nomination for his role in Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein is one of nine for the Netflix film.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the Brisbane-born actor said he was “beside himself” after receiving the news.

“I am so excited. I mean, I’m 28 years old. It’s wind in the sails,” he said.

Cave was nominated for the title song to Clint Bentley’s film Train Dreams, which stars Australian actor Joel Edgerton.

Edgerton, the central pillar of Train Dreams, was not nominated, though the picture earned four nominations, including best picture.

Australian costume and production designer Fiona Crombie has also been nominated for an Oscar this year, in the best production design category for her work on Hamnet

Sinners sets new record

Sinners, a segregation-era vampire thriller starring Michael ‍B Jordan, has stormed into the awards race with the most Academy Award nominations of any film this year, landing a record 16 nods.

The large haul sets up Sinners as the frontrunner heading into the 15 March Oscars, where it will face off against contenders One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and others for the coveted best picture prize.

The previous record for most nominations in a single year was 14, a mark hit by All About ‌Eve, Titanic and La La Land.

Bugonia, F1, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Train Dreams were also nominated for this ‍year’s best picture trophy.

Winners of the gold Oscar statuettes will be chosen by the roughly 10,000 actors, producers, directors and film craftspeople who make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Comedian Conan O’Brien will host for the second year.

Australians planning a holiday are facing a brutal blow with airfares set to surge and flights slashed as jet fuel supplies tighten and China curbs exports. From tomorrow, a return flight from Sydney to London with Cathay Pacific will be hit by an eye-watering $800 fuel surcharge on top of the usual ticket price. Qantas has already imposed a 5 per cent increase on international fares, while Virgin Australia has also begun raising its prices. Jetstar is quietly cancelling one in ten of its May flights in New Zealand, and Air New Zealand has already axed around 1,100 services.
