Buffalo Bills' stance on Bill Belichick revealed as team steps up search for new coach after firing Sean McDermott

The Buffalo Bills are currently in search of a new head coach, but it seems that even a seasoned coach with six Super Bowl victories might not be the right fit for them.

This search follows the dismissal of Sean McDermott, who was let go on Monday after the Bills suffered a disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs. In their quest to find a suitable replacement, the franchise has been exploring various options, including interviewing former quarterback Philip Rivers for the position.

However, the Bills appear to be steering clear of Bill Belichick, a name synonymous with success due to his 23-year tenure with the New England Patriots that saw him clinch six Super Bowl titles. Despite his impressive resume, the 73-year-old is reportedly considered “radioactive” in the eyes of many NFL team owners currently seeking a new head coach.

Belichick’s tarnished reputation has been attributed to a series of distractions and embarrassing headlines over the past year, largely linked to his relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend. Furthermore, his contentious departure from New England and strained ties with Patriots owner Robert Kraft have only fueled concerns among other NFL executives, who worry about potentially facing the same tumultuous situation.

The damning reputation has reportedly been fueled by the distractions and humiliating headlines that have shrouded Belichick over the past year – predominantly thanks to his 24-year-old girlfriend.

Meanwhile, Belichick is also said to have his bitter exit from New England and now frosty relationship with owner Robert Kraft to blame with other chiefs around the league said to fear that that venomous reaction turned on them.

There are also reservations over hiring Belichick due to the belief that he will conduct a full takeover, bringing in his own staff and firing long-time employees, which is what reportedly derailed his candidacy with the Atlanta Falcons back in 2024.

Belichick’s 49-year age difference with girlfriend Jordon Hudson sparked controversy after their relationship went public in 2023 and since then the former cheerleader has rarely been out of the spotlight.

Back in April, Hudson and Belichick were in the headlines after the former left an interviewer squirming when she awkwardly muscled in on the coach’s interview.

Belichick sat down with CBS’s Tony Dokoupilto promote his new book but he wasn’t alone as Hudson, described as ‘a constant presence during the interview,’ lurked off camera.

It also emerged earlier that month that Hudson had been pleading with the University of North Carolina to censor social media comments about the couple’s relationship.

Shortly after, in July, the Daily Mail revealed that the university was facing a tidal wave of backlash from alumni, donors and faculty, who said the age-gap relationship is eclipsing Belichick’s coaching debut – and tarnishing UNC’s reputation.

While the headline-grabbing couple have drawn media attention since they went public in 2023, emails obtained through a public records request exposed the internal uproar over what critics had been calling a ‘disgrace’ and a ‘circus.’

Meanwhile, in November, Hudson claimed she was taking legal action against former ESPN reporter Pablo Torre over his reports about her relationship with Belichick.

Torre has been responsible for several damaging reports about the cheerleader, including one which claimed she had been banned from the UNC football facility.

The Tar Heels refuted the allegations at the time and in response, alongside an Instagram post announcing legal action, Hudson uploaded a photo in which she is wearing a necklace that reads: ‘Banned’.

Meanwhile, despite hiring the most successful NFL coach of all time, UNC failed to qualify for this season’s College Football Playoffs, with a defeat to NC State meaning they finished 4-8 and missed out on a bowl game for the first time since 2018.

Since departing New England in January 2024 after 23 years, Belichick has only had one interview for an NFL position, which came with the Falcons.

Meanwhile, the Bills’ hiring quest was delivered a blow earlier this week when former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel dramatically canceled his scheduled interview with the Bills that was meant to take place on Friday in Florida.

McDaniel was fired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins after four seasons in the job having failed to make the playoffs, but is still highly-rated for his offensive work in the NFL.

The 42-year-old has an agreement to become the offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers as long as he doesn’t get offered a head-coaching vacancy.

But the chance to coach the Bills and their MVP quarterback Josh Allen was thought to appeal to McDaniel. His decision to cancel the meeting was first reported by The Athletic but no reason why has been offered.

The current Bills offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, has been interviewed over stepping up and replacing McDermott. Brian Daboll, who was fired as New York Giants head coach in November, has also met with the Bills’ front office.

Anthony Weaver, defensive coordinator under McDaniel in Miami, has also met with the Bills, as has Philip Rivers – who ended his retirement to play for the Indianapolis Colts this season.
