Former US President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have condemned federal officers after an intensive care nurse was shot dead in Minneapolis, in a stinging rebuke online.

Alex Pretti, aged 37, was fatally shot over the weekend after a confrontation with federal immigration officers in the city, during which he was reportedly thrown to the ground.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, stated that the officers discharged their weapons in “defensive shots” when a man approached them brandishing a firearm.

Critics have called out the current administration, stating, “Instead of enforcing discipline and accountability among their agents, the president and officials seem inclined to escalate tensions. Their public explanations for the shootings of Mr. Pretti and Renee Good lack thorough investigation and are seemingly contradicted by video evidence.”

There is a call for the federal administration to collaborate effectively with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to address the situation.

Meanwhile, they urged all Americans to support and find inspiration in the widespread peaceful protests occurring in Minneapolis and across the nation.

“These demonstrations serve as a vital reminder that it falls upon us as citizens to voice our opposition to injustice, safeguard our fundamental rights, and ensure our government is held accountable,” they expressed.
