The European Commission has launched an inquiry into X over concerns about sexualized deepfakes created by its Grok AI chatbot. The Commission will assess if X has effectively evaluated and managed the risks linked to Grok’s image-generating features within the EU, as previously highlighted by The New York Times.

Henna Virkkunen, who serves as the EU Commission’s executive vice president for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy, emphasized in a press release that “sexual deepfakes of women and children represent a cruel and unacceptable form of degradation.” She added, “This investigation aims to determine if X has adhered to its legal obligations under the DSA or has instead overlooked the rights of European citizens, including women and children, in the operation of its service.”

If X is found to have breached the DSA yet again, it could be penalized with fines reaching up to 6 percent of its worldwide annual revenue.
