Tepe Murders: Accused Stone-faced Killer Surgeon Tormented Former Wife Before Shootings

Michael McKee, a surgeon from Illinois, stands accused of the murder of his ex-wife, Monique McKee, and her husband, Spencer Tepe. Authorities allege that McKee had been stalking their residence in the weeks leading up to the tragic event.

The affidavit from Franklin County Municipal Court details that the 39-year-old McKee is charged with shooting Monique and Spencer Tepe at their Columbus home on December 30, located in the 1400 block of North 4th Street. Their two young children were found unharmed at the scene.

A newly-released affidavit, which was accessed by The Columbus Dispatch, suggests that McKee, now facing charges of aggravated murder and burglary, had meticulously planned the killings.

Security cameras reportedly captured McKee at the Tepe residence on December 6, where he stayed for several hours before leaving. On that day, Monique and Spencer were attending the Big Ten Championship football game in Indianapolis.

During the game’s halftime, Monique reportedly returned to their hotel room, and Spencer shared with friends that she seemed distressed over an issue related to her ex-husband.

Investigators said video showed McKee walking through the couple’s yard while they were in Indianapolis. His vehicle, a silver SUV, allegedly had a stolen license plate on it, and a distinct window sticker.

The same vehicle, with a different stolen license plate, had been spotted in the couple’s neighborhood hours before the murders, and leaving shortly after.

Investigators later tied the vehicle to McKee after locating it at the hospital he worked at. The sticker had been removed and authorities noted “fresh scrape marks on the window.”

Later, friends told authorities and McKee had been abusive to her during their brief 2015 marriage. By 2017, they were divorced.

Court records indicated that McKee had strangled Monique and at one point, forced her into “unwanted sex. He’s also accused of telling her that “he could kill her at any time.”

The affidavit also stated that investigators obtained McKee’s phone, which showed no activity on the day before the murder, through noon on December 30.

Investigators said McKee likely carried out the murders at 3:52 a.m.

According to a police report, police found Monique Tepe with a gunshot wound to the head and found Spencer Tepe with numerous gunshot wounds.

McKee has pleaded not guilty to the murders. He remains behind bars without bail at the James A. Karnes Corrections Center in Franklin County.
