FHP: Driver taken into custody after I-95 pursuit from Flagler to Duval County

Florida Highway Patrol Apprehends Driver Following I-95 Chase from Flagler to Duval County

In a tense sequence of events in Flagler County, a traffic stop escalated into a high-stakes pursuit that spanned multiple counties, culminating in Duval County. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), led by spokesperson Dylan Bryan, provided critical assistance in the unfolding situation after receiving a request from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began when the driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, was initially stopped by deputies but then fled, prompting an urgent call for backup. Bryan detailed the alarming behavior exhibited during the stop, noting that the driver had made “suicidal and homicidal threats,” elevating the urgency of the situation.

As the chase progressed, the runaway driver, maneuvering a blue convertible BMW, was soon spotted by troopers on I-95 in St. Johns County. A vigilant trooper maintained discreet surveillance, coordinating with other units as they closed in on the suspect.

The pursuit intensified as additional troopers converged on the vehicle north of I-95 and International Golf Parkway. Their coordinated efforts aimed to intercept the driver before the situation could escalate further, underscoring the challenges law enforcement faces in such high-pressure scenarios.

After deputies lost track of the driver, troopers located the driver’s vehicle, a blue convertible BMW, traveling northbound on I-95 in St. Johns County. Bryan said the first responding trooper provided undercover surveillance to additional units that were responding.

Once more troopers joined in on the pursuit, Bryan said troopers attempted to stop the driver’s vehicle just north of I-95 and International Golf Parkway.

However, Bryan said the driver continued traveling northbound on the interstate, driving at a “high rate of speed.”

“During the pursuit, the driver made numerous erratic and unsafe actions towards our troopers and the motoring public,” Bryan said. “The pursuit continued until the driver lost control of his vehicle in the construction area of I-95 and Emerson Street.”

The driver was reportedly then taken into custody without further incident.

No injuries were reported in the incident, from either the driver, public and law enforcement, Bryan said. However, the driver was taken to UF Health in Jacksonville for a precautionary medical evaluation.

FHP said the driver will face several charges from FHP and other agencies.
