An “unconstitutional” law that stripped citizenship from South African dual nationals has been reversed – and the implications have sent a ripple of confusion and alarm throughout the expat community.
Anyone who failed to do so would lose their citizenship – until now.

Reichert highlighted that travelers often receive a formal warning, along with a passport stamp indicating that South African citizens cannot enter or leave the country using a foreign passport. These individuals are urged to update their South African documents accordingly.

She advised South Africans residing overseas to thoroughly research and consult the appropriate authorities before making any decisions regarding travel arrangements, due to this entry requirement.

Emphasizing the legal obligations of dual citizens, Reichert urged them to remain calm amidst the prevailing confusion, anxiety, and misinformation surrounding the issue.

Can Australian-born children get South African citizenship?

The South African High Commission clarifies that children born outside the country, provided at least one parent holds South African citizenship, are eligible for citizenship by descent. To secure this status, the child’s birth must be registered in South Africa.
