Australian Open heat

A refreshing cool front is sweeping across southeastern Australia, offering relief after a spell of record-breaking heat.

While temperatures peaked over 40 degrees in NSW, Victoria and South Australia on Saturday, Sunday is bringing cooler weather to millions, which is set to continue into next week for parts of the country.

Over the past week, an intense heatwave shattered numerous long-standing records, with temperatures soaring to 50 degrees Celsius in two South Australian towns, as reported by Weatherzone.

More than 100,000 Victorians were left without power as the state baked in record-breaking heat and firefighters battled to stop blazes from escaping containment lines.

In the northwestern regions of the state, temperatures approached the 50-degree mark, while Melbourne experienced a sweltering peak of 45.6 degrees in its suburbs.

The small towns of Hopetoun and Walpeup recorded a scorching 48.9 degrees, surpassing their previous heat records of 48.8 degrees set during the notorious 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires.

In South Australia, Weatherzone highlighted that Woomera experienced an average maximum temperature of 46.7 degrees over seven days, marking its hottest week in 76 years of recorded history.
