DUNNELLON, Fla. – On Sunday, a significant blaze erupted in Marion County involving a pile of railroad ties, leading to alerts about the danger of toxic smoke.

The fire originated from a substantial collection of railroad ties situated near the intersection of East McKinney and North Williams streets.

Though firefighters managed to bring the flames under control, smoke remains a concern for those living in the vicinity.

The railroad ties had been treated with chemicals that release harmful substances when burned.

Local authorities advised residents to minimize time spent outdoors and to keep their homes sealed by closing windows and doors.

Dunnellon Mayor Walter Green declared a state of emergency on Sunday and later posted about the fire on Facebook.

“I want to take a few minutes of your time this Sunday evening. Our community has endured an enormous challenge this day. Fire and it’s [sic] potential of destruction was met by dedicated emergency personnel. They bravely stepped up to protect our beloved Dunnellon. I am so proud of these fellow citizens serving our Marion County. When you see Fireman, Deputy Sherriffs, give them your regards for a job well done. Our hometown is secure tonight. There will be a City Council Workshop Meeting tomorrow evening. 5:00 P.M. I extend a special invitation to my fellow citizens to attend. Our spirits of community remain strong and resilient. Thank you, my fellow citizens.”
